What a Marketplace account setup is
A Facebook Marketplace account setup gets your own personal Facebook account ready to sell. It covers three things that sellers usually discover the hard way: whether Marketplace is available to your account at all, how your seller profile looks to buyers, and whether your listings follow the rules Facebook checks every listing against. When all three are right, your listings go live, buyers trust you enough to message, and you spend your time answering questions instead of appealing rejections.
Marketplace is one of the simplest ways to sell to people near you. There is no shop to build and no website to maintain. But it is also one of the strictest parts of Facebook. Every listing is checked automatically, accounts that look new or unusual are held back, and a few rejected listings can lead to a seller losing access altogether. A careful setup reduces those risks before you start listing, not after.
This service works on your existing account. If your account is brand new or almost empty, the Facebook accounts setup is usually the better first step, because Marketplace looks at the account as a whole before it looks at your listings.
Who this setup is for
Our Marketplace clients range from people clearing out a house to small businesses that sell most of their stock locally. They usually fall into one of these groups:
- Resellers who buy and resell furniture, electronics, clothing or collectables and list several items a week.
- Makers who sell what they make, such as furniture, crafts, baked goods where allowed, or plants.
- Small local shops that use Marketplace alongside a physical store to reach buyers who would never walk in.
- Movers and declutterers who need to sell many items quickly and can’t afford to have listings held back.
What they share is that Marketplace is, or could be, a real part of their income. For them, a rejected listing or a lost seller account is not a small annoyance. It is lost sales.
Why a prepared seller account sells more
Buyers on Marketplace are local, ready to buy and comparing several sellers at once. Small details decide who they message first.
Buyers check you before they check the item
Before arranging a pickup with a stranger, most buyers tap the seller’s name. They look at the profile photo, how long the account has existed, the city and whether there are ratings. A seller with a real photo, a filled-in profile and a location that matches the listing gets more messages than one who looks like they appeared yesterday, even when the item is the same.
Listings that go live stay in front of buyers
A listing that is rejected or held for review misses the hours when most people see it. A listing that is written to pass the checks the first time goes live immediately and gets its full chance. Over dozens of listings that difference adds up to real money.
Fewer lost weeks
The most expensive event for a seller is losing Marketplace access. Rebuilding it, if it can be rebuilt at all, takes time. Avoiding the patterns that lead there is worth more than any listing trick.
Why Marketplace is missing from your account
When Marketplace isn’t available, Facebook usually shows a short message saying the account doesn’t meet the requirements. It rarely says which one. These are the reasons we see most often, in the order we check them.
Your country or region
Marketplace is only offered in certain countries. If you live somewhere it hasn’t launched, there is no setting that turns it on, and using a VPN or changing your location to get around it is the kind of behaviour that gets accounts restricted. We will tell you honestly if this is the reason.
Age on the account
Marketplace is for adults. If the birthday on your account is wrong, sometimes from a typo years ago, the account may be treated as under 18. Correcting it goes through Facebook’s own process and can take time.
A new or inactive account
Accounts that were created recently, or that sat unused for a long time, are often held back from Marketplace. Facebook does this to slow down scammers who open new accounts to sell. The answer is a complete profile, secure login and a period of normal activity, not a new account.
Past policy problems
If Marketplace was available and then disappeared, the usual cause is earlier listings that broke the rules, or reports from buyers. In that case Facebook often shows an option to request a review. We help you prepare that request carefully, because how you describe what happened matters.
Sometimes it’s just the menu
Facebook moves its shortcuts around. On some phones Marketplace sits under the menu rather than on the main bar, and an outdated app can hide it. We rule this out first, because it takes a minute and saves a lot of worry.
Why listings get rejected
Every listing is checked against Facebook’s Commerce Policies. Some items can’t be sold at all, such as weapons, animals, alcohol, medicines and many health products, adult items, and digital items such as gift cards or accounts. But most rejections we see come from ordinary items described in the wrong way.
- Services listed as items. Marketplace is built for physical things. A cleaning service, a lesson or a repair listed as an item is usually removed.
- Words that trip the automatic checks. Some colours, materials and brand names look like restricted items to an automated system. Plain, accurate descriptions avoid most of these.
- Prices that don’t match. A price of one dollar to attract attention, or a price that differs from the one in the description, looks misleading.
- Links and contact details. Sending buyers to another website or to a phone number in the first lines of a listing is treated as moving the sale off Facebook.
- Duplicates. Posting the same item many times, or deleting and reposting it daily, looks like spam.
- Photos that aren’t of the item. Stock photos or images taken from other sellers make buyers suspicious and can lead to removal.
What the setup includes
Access check and diagnosis
We go through each reason above with you and identify which applies. If Marketplace can be reached through normal use or Facebook’s own review options, we plan the route. If it can’t, for example because of your country, we say so before you spend more.
A seller profile buyers trust
Profile photo, cover photo, intro, location and the details buyers see when they tap your name. We also check your Marketplace location and delivery preferences, so your listings appear to the buyers who can actually collect them.
Listings that pass the first time
Depending on your package, we review or rewrite your listings: title, category, condition, price, description and photos. Each one is checked against the Commerce Policies before it goes live, and rejected listings are reviewed one by one.
Buyer replies and a routine
Your handover includes short reply templates for the questions buyers always ask, and a routine for listing, renewing and marking items sold that avoids the patterns which look like spam.
What a listing that sells looks like
The listings that go live first time and get the most messages tend to share the same habits. None of them is complicated, and all of them are part of the listing review in this setup.
A plain, specific title
Say what the item is, its brand or type, and its size or model where it matters: “Oak dining table, seats six” rather than “Amazing table!!! must go”. Buyers search with plain words, and the automatic checks are calmer about plain words too.
Real photos, in good light
Use four to eight photos of the actual item, taken in daylight against a clean background, including any marks or damage. Honest photos reduce wasted questions and disputes after the sale.
One honest price
Put the real price in the price field and keep the description consistent with it. If you are open to offers, say so in words rather than listing a fake low price.
A description that answers the first three questions
Condition, dimensions, and how pickup or delivery works. A buyer who has those answers sends a message that leads somewhere, instead of “is this still available?”.
Pros and cons of selling on Marketplace
Marketplace is a strong channel for many sellers, and a poor fit for some. Here is the honest version.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Buyers are local and ready to buy now. | Strict automatic checks can remove listings without much explanation. |
| No shop or website needed to start. | Not every product or service is allowed. |
| Listings are quick to create from your phone. | Losing seller access stops all your sales at once. |
| Your profile and ratings build trust over time. | Many messages are from casual browsers and need patience. |
| Works well alongside a physical shop or other channels. | Scam attempts target sellers, so you need to know the signs. |
Businesses that sell many items often add a Facebook Page as a public home for the brand, so buyers who like one item can find the rest of what you offer.
Selling safely
A setup isn’t only about getting listings live. Sellers are targets too, and a few rules prevent most losses.
- Never share verification codes. A buyer who asks you to read out a code sent to your phone is trying to take over an account, not buy an item.
- Be careful with overpayment. A buyer who pays too much and asks for the difference back is a common scam.
- Keep conversations on Facebook until the sale is agreed, so there is a record if something goes wrong.
- Meet in public places for local pickups, and bring someone with you for high-value items.
- Check payment before handing over the item, using a method you trust and understand.
Facebook’s Help Center has a section on buying and selling safely, and your handover points you to the parts that matter for what you sell.
How the setup works
- Order and brief. Tell us what you sell, how many items, and what has happened so far: missing Marketplace, rejected listings, or simply a fresh start.
- Diagnosis. We check access and your public seller profile, and send you a short plan.
- Guided work. On a screen-share, or with written steps, you update your profile and settings while we explain each change. Your login stays on your own device.
- Listings. We review or rewrite the agreed number of listings with you before they go live.
- Handover. You receive the written summary, reply templates and routine, with 14 days of questions included.
What this setup can’t do
- We can’t make Marketplace available in a country where Facebook doesn’t offer it, and we won’t help you hide your location.
- We can’t override Facebook’s decisions. If your access was removed, the only route is Facebook’s own review, and the outcome is theirs.
- We can’t list items that the Commerce Policies don’t allow, however the listing is worded.
- We don’t sell for you, handle buyers’ payments or promise a number of sales.
What we do promise is an account and listings set up carefully, by the published rules, with clear explanations you can reuse for every item you sell afterwards.
After the handover
For the first few weeks, list steadily rather than all at once, reply to buyers quickly, and mark items as sold when they go. Keep your profile and location current if you move. If a listing is ever rejected, read the reason before you change anything, fix that one thing, and don’t repost the same item repeatedly. A seller account that behaves consistently becomes easier to sell from over time, and the ratings you build are yours to keep.

Facebook Marketplace Account Setup: questions we hear most
A1Why is Marketplace not showing on my account?
The usual reasons are a very new or empty account, a country where Marketplace isn’t offered, the age on the account, or past policy warnings. We find which one applies and use Facebook’s own options to fix it where that is possible.
A2Can you get Marketplace back if it was taken away?
If Facebook removed access for a policy reason, the only route is Facebook’s own review request. We help you prepare it properly, but the decision is Facebook’s and nobody can promise the result.
A3Why do my listings keep getting rejected?
Most rejections come from the item itself or how it is described: services listed as items, prices that don’t match, outside links, or the same item posted many times. We go through each rejected listing with you.
A4Do I need a business to sell on Marketplace?
No. Personal sellers use their own account. Businesses with many items may also want a Facebook Page, which we can set up as a separate service.
A5Do you need my password?
No. We work with you on a screen-share or with written steps. Your login stays on your own device.
A6Can you sell for me?
No. We set up the account and listings, and you stay the seller. We don’t take part in sales or handle buyers’ payments.
